5TONIC Laboratory awarded key roles in €50 million EU sponsored 5G program

The 5TONIC 5G co-creation laboratory in Madrid, together with some of its member companies, has been awarded a vital role in three high-profile EU-sponsored 5G development projects. The awards cement the laboratory's position as one of Europe's foremost 5G digital innovation centers.

The three projects are designed to help innovate and test 5G vertical market applications and services in the end-to-end environment that is a key feature of the 5TONIC facility. The projects will run for three years and were selected by the EU from a total of 16 proposals it received from facilities all over Europe.

Announcing 5TONIC's role in the three chosen projects, David Del Val, Chairman 5TONIC and CEO Telefónica R&D, said: "To be chosen to participate in these EU vertical market 5G trials is complete vindication of the approach we took when establishing the 5TONIC facility.

"We recognised that the mobile community and academia partners would need to come together to work with industry sectors on 5G projects to test, develop and prove the potential use cases in a controlled environment. To now be selected as one of the key centers to drive these important EU projects forward shows that we are doing the right things and taking the right approach."

The 5TONIC laboratory will be a center for the 5G EVE, 5G-VINNI and 5GENESIS projects, which form part of the EU's Horizon 2020 programme. Together they comprise a three-part €50m initiative driven by the Commission's 5G PPP organisation, and will also attract an investment commitment by the ICT industry of several times that amount.

The three chosen projects are:

5G EVE (European Validation platform for Extensive trials) aims to create the foundations for the roll-out of end-to-end 5G neworks in Europe. 5G-EVE supports this transition by offering to vertical industries, and to all 5G PPP Phase 3 projects, facilities to validate their network KPIs and their services.

5G-VINNI (5G Verticals INNovation Infrastructure) looks to accelerate the uptake of 5G in Europe by providing an end-to-end (E2E) facility that validates the performance of new 5G technologies by operating trials of advanced vertical sector services.

5GGENESIS (5th Generation End-to-end Network, Experimentation, System Integration, and Showcasing) will create an integrated end-to-end 5G facility where 5G network KPIs for various 5G use cases can be validated and brought together with a view towards their integration in one united full-stack, end-to-end 5G platform.

The 5TONIC facility was co-founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute. Both of the co-founders will be closely involved with the new projects, working alongside other 5TONIC member companies including Ericsson and UC3M. Telefónica is the only European Telco that is participating in all three EU projects. Ericsson is also involved in all three, while UC3M is the only European university that is taking part in two of the three projects.
