The Benefits of Using Smart Phones for Campus Access Control, Cashless Transactions & More

Here’s how provisioning your credentials onto smart phones can improve security and campus customer experience.

Many college campuses use ID cards for student and staff access control, as well as cafeteria, library and laundry privileges. However, there is a better way. Institutions of higher education can improve security and customer satisfaction by having students and staff use their mobile phones rather than student and staff ID cards for these tasks.

A mobile phone credential is more secure than a mag stripe card, proximity card or smart card because it’s encrypted onto the near field communications (NFC) chip of a smart phone. Additionally, students and staff are much less likely to lose or let someone else use their mobile phones than their ID cards.

In this interview with Campus Safety magazine at Campus Safety Conference Texas 2019, which was held in Dallas last month, Dan Lewis, who is a senior security solutions engineer with Transact, discusses the benefits of using a smart phone for campus access control and other non-security-related tasks, such as cashless transactions.

He also helps viewers understand what exactly is a mobile credential and how it works on Android and Apple smart phones, and even Apple watches.
