Zebra Technologies Automates Medical Device Tracking

Zebra Technologies Corporation, an innovator at the edge of the enterprise with solutions and partners that enable businesses to gain a performance edge, announced that the Hexagone Neuilly Group uses the Zebra TC51-HC touch computer for automated medical device tracking in its hospital operating theatres to increase productivity.

Located at Neuilly-sur-Seine outside of Paris, the Hexagone Neuilly Group includes the Ambroise Paré, Pierre Cherest and Hartmann clinics which annually process nearly 50,000 overnight patient stays as well as outpatient services.

The clinics previously managed paper-based records alongside several software applications which resulted in data-entry errors. They needed an automated solution to comply with new French regulations on medical device traceability during operations.

The group contacted Ehtrace, a Zebra partner, which has designed innovative healthcare traceability solutions for the last decade. Ehtrace recommended Zebra’s Android™ based TC51-HC combined with its own scanDM application.

The Zebra TC51-HC meets all the project’s specifications including a healthcare-certified device with high-quality medical-grade plastic, high-performance 1D and 2D barcode scanning capability and excellent network connection.

“We chose Zebra’s TC51-HC touch computers because they are certified for use in hospitals and medical environments, and they help increase the productivity of our clinicians so they can spend more time on patient care,” confirmed Charlotte Dubois, Project Manager, Ambroise Paré Surgical-Medical unit. “These innovative devices are user-friendly, reliable, robust and easy to clean after each operation.  We are very pleased with the time andcost savingss resulting from this solution.”

The clinics use the Zebra TC51-HC computers and Ehtrace’s scanDM application in operating theatres to capture real-time information and analysis of medical product use as well as consolidating operation and patient data.

Each surgical procedure requires up to 140 medical devices.  The rapid, reliable barcode scanning features of the Zebra TC51-HC combined with Ehtrace’s scanDM application browsing and interfacing capability ensures instant data transfer to all the clinics’ systems.

This solution can also manage inventory, trigger use-by date alerts, track usage and facilitate order processing in drug stores and hospital storage units. The Hexagone Neuilly Group’s goal is to cut in half the time spent on inventory management.

“Over the last year, we have worked with our partner, Ehtrace to improve our understanding of the Hexagone Neuilly Group’s needs and our ability to provide a quality solution,” commented Jaime Faria, Channel Director, France, Zebra Technologies. “Our healthcare products are designed to meet Hexagone Neuilly Group’s needs, enabling faster completion of daily tasks which helps boost its overall efficiencies.”

Ultimately, this solution helps clinicians and patients be better informed through real-time access to detailed information on medical procedures, drugs and implants. Clinical records are more comprehensive, and the Hexagone Neuilly Group benefits from a detailed cost analysis of each operation.
